About

5 in a row with Playing Cards.

Based on the cards in your hand, play a chip on the corresponding square on the board. Use the Jacks as wild cards to add or remove chips anywhere. Attempt to get 5 in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Skill vs Luck

A good amount has been written about how much of this game is skill and how much is the luck of the draw. The consensus seems to be that it's more luck of the draw than skill. The game does have a great illusion of skill due to the large number of choices you have on each of your turns. But, in the end luck rather than strategy decides most games.

Thoughts

2.5/5 Good

Skill or Luck, it does "feel" like strategic play helps. I find this game the most fun with 4 people in two teams.

Great for mixed age groups as I've played this with my parents, friends, and nieces and nephews. Quick to learn and a fun game if people are not looking for something heavy and serious.

When I play this again I'll look at some possible "House Rules" to make the game a bit more strategic.

Not bad for a 'passing the time' game, but not a lot of skill required. A bit better than something like Rumikub, but just barely.

Trivia

  • Released in 1982 and designed by Doug Reuter
  • In a story almost too good to be true. Doug says he came up with the idea from seeing it in a dream. For a few years it just sat in his closet until a chance game night when he brought the game to play with friends and they loved it. Shortly afterwards he pitched the game to a local game company and they purchased the rights the next day.
